He carried Jolie out of the fountain and laid her out on his shirt. Looking down at her as her skin glowed in the moonlight, thinking he’d never seen a more beautiful sight. He knelt next to her and traced his finger down the length of her curves, pleased when her nipples instantly hardened. He smiled at her body’s reaction to his slightest touch. He stroked her again and she shivered.
“Are you cold, love?”
“Um... just a little. Hold me.”
Cole gathered her close, pulling her into his lap. He pressed kisses along her hairline and upon her temple as Jolie kept her eyes closed and drifted along in the afterglow of their loving. She shivered again as the cool air dried the water from her body.
“I’m taking you to bed.” He set her from him and pulled on his breeches, then reached for her.
“My clothes.”
“Don’t worry sweet.” Cole picked up his topcoat and wrapped her in it. It was huge and fell to her knees. Satisfied, he scooped Jolie up into his arms and carried her back to the house through the now empty ballroom. Cole glanced down at her, intending to make a comment about the success of the ball, only to find her asleep. Kissing her forehead Cole held her close to his heart and walked towards the stairs blissfully happy until Gregor suddenly stepped in his path.
Cole stopped in his tracks, stunned to see him. “Gregor, when did you return? I thought you were going to stay in Boston until next week.” Cole did his best to maintain a light tone, but his ire was rising rapidly as he watched the man ogle his semi-clothed wife.
“Business there wasn’t going very well. I am beginning to wonder why you sent me there in the first place.” Gregor’s eyes bore into Cole’s and then looked upon the sleeping Jolie once more. The hatred in his eyes was blatant, and it filled Cole with fear. He held Jolie closer, eyes locked on his right-hand man. When Gregor once again looked up, the warning he saw on Cole’s face was cold and clear. ‘Stay away from my wife or I’ll kill you’.
“We’ll have to discuss it in the morning. I need to get Jolie to bed. It has been an exhausting evening. Goodnight Gregor.”
Gregor’s eyes bore into Cole’s but he finally gave a curt nod and turned on his heel. The battle wasn’t over, in fact it had just begun. Cole watched him go and made a mental note to check Celia’s door and to rouse Jonathan. Gregor was home and he was furious. Cole knew how evil Gregor could be, and the women had to be protected at all costs.
